Compress a PDF: understand the quality tradeoff

Published by MyDocverter · Published and updated

Choose between lossless rewriting and a raster copy.

Try lossless first

Lossless mode rewrites PDF objects using compressed object streams. It keeps page content rather than making screenshots. It may reduce inefficient files, but an already optimized PDF may stay the same size or become larger.

When a raster copy helps

For a large scan, raster mode renders pages and stores JPEG images. Lower resolution and quality can reduce size, but small text can become blurry. Searchable text, interactive forms and links are lost. Keep an original and inspect small print at normal viewing size.

A target is not a guarantee

Enter a target in MB if a portal has a size limit. The tool reports actual byte counts and whether the result met the target. It does not repeatedly reduce quality until a number is reached. If it is still too large, try a lower resolution or split the document.
